In today’s world, understanding the patterns and causes of diseases in populations is more crucial than ever. For anyone interested in public health, medicine, or even data science, a solid grasp of epidemiology is essential. I recently completed Coursera’s “Epidemiology Fundamentals (Part 1)” (流行病学基础（上）), a course developed by Peking University’s esteemed School of Public Health, and I’m excited to share my experience and recommendations.
This course, taught by a distinguished team including Professor Liming Li, Professor Yonghua Hu, and Professor Siyan Zhan, provides a comprehensive introduction to the core principles of epidemiology. The overview clearly states the goal: to equip learners with the fundamental concepts, principles, and applications of epidemiology in the medical field. It aims to introduce students to the thought processes, methods, and implementation steps of epidemiological research, as well as the ability to use findings to inform public health strategies and interventions.
The syllabus covers a logical progression of topics, starting with an “Introduction to Epidemiology” and moving into “Distribution of Diseases.” It then delves into the key research methodologies: “Descriptive Epidemiology,” “Cohort Studies,” and “Case-Control Studies.” The course also tackles the critical aspect of “Causation and Causal Inference,” laying the groundwork for understanding how to determine the factors that lead to disease. The curriculum is designed to build a strong foundation, with a “Final Exam” to assess comprehension.
What impressed me most about this course was the depth and clarity of the explanations. While the course is delivered in Mandarin, the foundational concepts are universal. The instructors break down complex ideas into digestible segments, making the material accessible even to those new to the field. The course effectively bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, preparing learners for future, more advanced studies or research.
As this is the first part, it focuses on the foundational elements. The overview mentions that a subsequent “Epidemiology Fundamentals (Part 2)” will cover experimental epidemiology, screening, bias, and disease prevention strategies. This structure ensures a thorough and systematic learning experience.
