As a burgeoning project manager, I recently completed the “Project Execution: Running the Project” course, the fourth installment in the esteemed Google Project Management Certificate program on Coursera. This course masterfully navigates the critical execution and closing phases of the project lifecycle, equipping learners with essential skills for real-world application.
The syllabus is thoughtfully structured, beginning with an “Introduction to project execution.” Here, the course lays the groundwork by defining what aspects of a project demand tracking and the methodologies for doing so. Crucially, it emphasizes the importance of proactively managing changes, dependencies, and risks, and the vital skill of communicating these elements, especially critical risks, to stakeholders.
Moving into “Quality management and continuous improvement,” the course provides practical techniques for ensuring project quality. It highlights effective customer communication strategies and various methods for measuring customer satisfaction. The exploration of continuous and process improvement techniques, including conducting project retrospectives, is invaluable for fostering a culture of ongoing enhancement.
The “Data-informed decision-making” module underscores the power of data. Learners are guided on gathering, prioritizing, and utilizing data to make informed project decisions. The emphasis on presenting this data effectively to stakeholders and team members through visuals and clear communication techniques is a significant takeaway.
“Leadership and influencing skills” delves into the human element of project management. Understanding team dynamics, stages of development, and fostering an ethical and inclusive environment are key. The course also explores various sources of power and influence, empowering managers to lead their teams more effectively.
“Effective project communication” reinforces the importance of clear and consistent communication. It covers tools and strategies for team communication, facilitating productive meetings, and delivering impactful status updates to all relevant parties.
Finally, the course concludes with “Closing a project,” a phase often overlooked but critical for project success. It details how to determine project completion, the steps involved in the closing process, and the creation and dissemination of essential project closing documentation.
Overall, “Project Execution: Running the Project” is a comprehensive and practical course. It builds upon foundational knowledge with actionable strategies and real-world scenarios. I highly recommend this course to anyone looking to solidify their project management skills, particularly in the crucial execution and closing stages. It’s an investment that pays dividends in project success and professional development.
