In the complex world of electrical engineering, understanding the intricacies of high voltage (HV) power grids and their protection systems is paramount. Recently, I dived into a comprehensive Udemy course titled “Protections et systèmes de contrôle du réseau électrique HT” (Protection and Control Systems of HV Electrical Networks), and I’m excited to share my experience.
This course offers a robust introduction to HV electrical networks, covering essential components like transformers, circuit breakers, disconnectors, and busbars, as well as different substation types (GIS and AIS). It seamlessly transitions from general principles to specific protection applications, making it ideal for both students and practicing engineers looking to deepen their knowledge.
The curriculum is structured logically across 9 sessions. The initial sessions lay a strong foundation by discussing the generalities of electrical networks and the fundamental requirements and technologies of protection systems. A significant portion of the course is dedicated to measurement transformers (CTs and VTs), explaining their definitions, common configurations, and crucial role in protection schemes.
What truly stands out are the detailed explanations of specific protection functions. The course delves into overcurrent protection (50-51), including its applications and the concept of homopolar protection. It then moves on to distance protection (21), thoroughly explaining line impedance, polygonal and time/distance characteristics, teleprotection, and anti-pumping functions. These sessions are particularly valuable for understanding how faults are detected and isolated efficiently in HV systems.
Finally, the course addresses automatic reclosing devices (79), discussing their application in both medium voltage (MV) and HV networks, as well as the critical parameters and circuit breaker characteristics involved. The final session touches upon three-phase reclosing and synchronization functions (79/25) within the transport network, providing a complete picture of modern grid control.
**Recommendation:**
I highly recommend “Protections et systèmes de contrôle du réseau électrique HT” to anyone involved in power system protection and control. The instructor provides clear explanations, supported by relevant examples. While the course is in French, the technical content is universally applicable. If you’re looking to gain a solid understanding of HV grid protection, this course is an excellent investment.
