In today’s increasingly connected world, the Internet of Things (IoT) is no longer a futuristic concept but a tangible reality shaping our daily lives. From smart homes to advanced industrial applications, understanding IoT is becoming essential. That’s why I recently enrolled in Coursera’s ‘Introduction to Internet of Things,’ a comprehensive course meticulously curated by the eminent faculty of IIT Bombay in conjunction with TIH Foundation for IoT & IoE. This four-module course, led by the knowledgeable Prof. Rajbabu Velmurugan, Prof. Laxmeesha Somappa, and Prof. Gaurav S. Kasbekar, is an excellent starting point for anyone looking to grasp the fundamentals of this transformative technology.

The course is structured logically, beginning with a foundational module on ‘Internet of Things (IoT): An Introduction.’ Here, Prof. Velmurugan expertly breaks down the essence of IoT, its diverse applications, and unique characteristics. The module also covers various IoT models, components, and architectures, using relatable examples like home automation to solidify understanding. This initial module serves as a perfect primer, ensuring learners have a solid grasp of the core concepts before moving forward.

Next, ‘Sensors & Interfaces,’ guided by Prof. Laxmeesha Somappa, dives into the critical role of sensors in IoT. We explored sensor classifications, in-depth case studies on accelerometers, proximity sensors, and temperature sensors, and crucial sensor characteristics like sensitivity and accuracy. The module also provided a thorough explanation of analog-to-digital conversion (ADC) and the non-idealities that can affect sensor readings, offering practical insights into hardware interfacing.

‘Networking of IoT Nodes,’ led by Prof. Gaurav S. Kasbekar, tackles the complex yet vital aspect of connecting IoT devices. This module introduced the concept of IoT nodes and their applications across various sectors, highlighting the challenges in networking them. We learned about low-power, low-data-rate networks like IEEE 802.15.4, LoRa, and SigFox, as well as essential protocols such as 6LoWPAN, CoAP, and MQTT. The detailed explanations of messaging formats and communication intricacies were particularly valuable.

Finally, the ‘Data Analysis for IoT’ module, again under the guidance of Prof. Velmurugan, addresses the massive data generated by IoT devices. This module explored the significance of data analysis for IoT, introducing learning methods and Python-based implementations. We delved into techniques like linear regression, time-series models, and clustering, equipping us with the skills to extract meaningful insights from IoT data. The module concludes with a special message from the CEO of TIH-IoT, reinforcing the practical applications and future potential of this field.

Overall, ‘Introduction to Internet of Things’ on Coursera is an exceptionally well-designed course. The professors are clear, engaging, and provide a wealth of knowledge. The blend of theoretical concepts, practical examples, and hands-on insights makes it highly recommendable for students, professionals, and anyone curious about the IoT landscape. It has certainly equipped me with the foundational knowledge to explore this exciting domain further.
