In the realm of building performance and energy efficiency, understanding and calculating thermal losses (déperdition thermique) is paramount. Whether you’re an aspiring HVAC technician, an energy auditor, or simply a homeowner looking to optimize your building’s energy consumption, a solid grasp of these calculations is essential. I recently completed the Udemy course “Calcul de la déperdition thermique d’un local” (Calculating Heat Loss in a Room), and I’m here to share my experience and recommendation.
This course is meticulously designed to equip learners with the fundamental principles and practical methods for calculating heat loss. It delves into the “why” behind these calculations, highlighting their crucial role in correctly sizing heating systems, evaluating energy performance, and proposing effective improvement solutions like insulation and ventilation.
The curriculum is logically structured, starting with the basics of building thermal science in Module 1. It then moves on to the core heat transfer mechanisms – conduction, convection, and radiation – in Module 2, introducing key concepts like thermal resistance (R) and thermal transmittance (U). Module 3 is where the practical application begins, detailing the methodology for calculating transmission losses through various building elements such as walls, floors, roofs, and windows, complete with useful tables of standard values.
Module 4 addresses heat loss due to air renewal, covering both natural and mechanical ventilation, as well as uncontrolled air infiltration. The course culminates in a practical case study (Module 5) where participants learn to analyze a real-world local, calculate losses for each component, determine the overall heat loss, and even get an indicative sizing for a heating system. Module 6 explores strategies for reducing heat loss, including insulation techniques and high-performance glazing, and introduces the concept of energy simulation software. Finally, Module 7 provides valuable exercises and a mini-project to solidify learning and includes a validation quiz.
What I particularly appreciated about this course was its blend of theoretical knowledge and practical application. The explanations are clear, and the examples provided are easy to follow. The case study is a fantastic way to tie all the learned concepts together. While the course is in French, the subject matter is universal, and the visual aids and calculations are largely understandable even if French isn’t your primary language. For those in the building or energy sector, or those wanting to gain a deeper understanding of building physics, this course is a highly recommended investment. It provides the foundational knowledge needed to make informed decisions about energy efficiency and comfort in buildings.
