In today’s fast-paced world, projects are the backbone of virtually every organization, and even our personal lives. Whether you’re launching a new product, organizing an event, or even planning a home renovation, understanding the principles of effective project management is crucial. That’s why I recently enrolled in Coursera’s ‘Fundamentals of Project Planning and Management,’ and I’m thrilled to share my experience.

This introductory course provides a solid foundation for anyone looking to navigate the complexities of project execution. It breaks down the seemingly daunting task of project management into digestible, actionable steps.

**Week 1: Welcome to the World of Projects** kicked off with a clear definition of what a project is (and isn’t), emphasizing its core objectives and the importance of stakeholder analysis using tools like the power/interest grid. We explored common pitfalls that lead to project failure and learned how to measure success, setting the stage for understanding the project lifecycle.

**Week 2: The Ins & Outs of Project Planning** dove deep into the art of creating a comprehensive project plan. This module clarified the purpose of planning, outlined essential components, and introduced vital concepts like task sequencing, dependency identification, and the critical path method. Learning how to determine a project’s duration and schedule effectively, and how to adapt plans, was particularly insightful.

**Week 3: It’s a Risky World & Then the Unexpected Happened** tackled the inevitable realm of risk and uncertainty. We learned to identify, assess, and prioritize risks, with a special focus on schedule risks and budget contingency planning. The strategies for dealing with ambiguity were also a valuable takeaway.

**Week 4: Ready, Set, Go: Project Execution** transitioned from theory to practice, focusing on monitoring and controlling project progress using the earned value approach. We also touched upon the impact of individual habits on project success and explored alternative execution methodologies like Agile, Scrum, and Kanban. The course concluded with a comprehensive review, tying all the concepts together.
