I recently completed Coursera’s “Leading Positive Change through Appreciative Inquiry,” and it has fundamentally shifted my perspective on organizational development and leadership.

Appreciative Inquiry, as the course explains, is a collaborative process that focuses on discovering what gives life to organizations and human systems when they are at their best. Instead of dwelling on deficits, AI seeks to identify and amplify strengths, positive experiences, and future possibilities. This strength-based approach, a stark contrast to the less than 30% success rate of deficit-based change methods, is the core of this transformative methodology.

The course is structured brilliantly, guiding learners through the principles and practical applications of AI. Week one sets the stage by defining AI and its philosophical underpinnings, contrasting it with traditional problem-solving. The emphasis on “the power of the positive question” in week two was particularly impactful. Engaging in an “appreciative interview” exercise, where we explored past strengths through guided questions, truly demonstrated how the questions we ask shape our reality.

Week three introduces the “4-D Cycle” – Discovery, Dream, Design, and Destiny – the practical framework for implementing AI. Seeing a video example of an appreciative leader reconnecting their organization with its core strengths was inspiring. The course highlights the importance of discovering past strengths to build a foundation for future dreams and innovations.

Further reinforcing the theoretical backbone, week four delves into the research supporting AI, emphasizing the profound impact of positive language and imagery. The idea that “words create worlds” and the recommendation to foster a 4:1 positive-to-negative interaction ratio in daily conversations are actionable insights that can be applied immediately.

The course doesn’t shy away from real-world application. Week five presents a compelling case study of a trucking company that used AI to transform its culture and profitability, moving from “Topic Choice” through the 4-D Cycle. This practical example solidified the potential of AI to drive significant, sustainable change.

Finally, week six integrates all the concepts with another robust case study in a steel mill, showcasing unexpected positive outcomes in safety improvements. The course concludes with practical advice on how leaders can begin experimenting with AI in their own lives and work, encouraging a shift from “doing” AI to “being” AI.
