Embarking on the journey of understanding life’s grand narrative, I recently completed Coursera’s “Biological Evolution” course, and it was an absolutely illuminating experience.
At its core, this course masterfully weaves together Darwin’s foundational concepts of “Natural Selection” and “The Tree of Life” with contemporary revisions and expansions of his theories. It delves deep into the driving forces behind evolution, such as genetic variation, natural selection, neutral selection, and genetic drift. What truly sets this course apart is its comprehensive approach to the methodologies and technologies used in evolutionary research. Through a plethora of real-world examples, it expertly explains phenomena ranging from ancient fossils to the vibrant biodiversity of today, from morphological changes to shifts in genetic material, and from the origins of biomolecules to the evolution of humankind.
The syllabus is structured logically, starting with a historical overview of evolutionary thought, tracing the contributions of luminaries like Lamarck and Darwin. It then meticulously details the revisions to Darwin’s theories, particularly highlighting the integration of genetics and molecular biology. Subsequent modules explore the nuances of natural and artificial selection, the concept of adaptation and its measurement through ‘fitness’, and the groundbreaking neutral theory of molecular evolution proposed by Motoo Kimura.
